The film shows ships being built and repaired, cargo being loaded and unloaded, cargo warehouses and freezers and ships being refuelled. Panoramic shot across the city of Hamburg, Germany (former West Germany). A large ship moves down the Elbe river in docklands area of the city. A large group of men walk down a pier and embark on dozens of waiting boats. An old man lights a pipe and smokes it. The boats set off in a convoy down the river, huge ships can be seen in the background and large cranes line the shore. The camera passes under the prow of one of the large ships whilst workers stand on deck talking, laughing and smoking. A sign is shown that reads “Achtung! Schiff erwartet Nicht anbinden” Two tugboats pull a large ship, bellowing out black smoke as they do so. A large passenger ferry is seen arriving and dockers are shown handling large ropes and mooring it to the shore as the passengers wave from on board. A gathered crowd wave flags and cheer as passengers disembark. A crane is shown lifting cars from the deck of the ship. Another ship is shown having cargo lifted onto deck where it is taken by the sailors. A worker is shown turning a wheel to operate the crane. A man with a clipboard takes note of the cargo as it is brought onto the ship. After it is checked the crane removes the loads and puts them on smaller boats waiting next to the large ship. A large pipe pours coal into a waiting barge and workmen with shovels move it around. Cargo is brought inside a large storage warehouse and stacked in large piles. One of the workers uses a knife to cut open one of the bales and inspects the cotton inside.
