Suzume, Weathering with You and Your Name Are One Film Told Three Times

Your Name, Weathering with You and Suzume are one story told three times. What is one person allowed to trade for the world, and why Shinkai answers it differently every time. An essay on Makoto Shinkai's disaster trilogy: the comet that misses in Your Name, the Tokyo that goes under the sea in Weathering with You, and the doors that are closed with a prayer in Suzume. How each film answers the same question, what Shinkai has said about the 2011 earthquake and about turning it from a metaphor into a subject, and why the order matters. Every quoted line is from the films.
