Astronomers watched a magnetar being born

Astronomers may have captured the birth of a magnetar inside the superluminous supernova SN 2024afav. A repeating wobble in its light was attributed to a tilted newborn core dragging spacetime as it spins, offering evidence that rapidly rotating magnetars power at least some of the brightest stellar explosions.
