One private company once ruled over millions of people — and answered only to its shareholders. It commanded an army of 260,000 soldiers, collected taxes from around 20 million people, and at its height was responsible for almost half of Britain's trade. It was not a kingdom or a government. It was a business, run from one office in London. This is the true story of the East India Company — the company that ruled the world.
In this 2D animated documentary, we trace the Company from a royal charter signed in London on 31 December 1600 to its formal dissolution on 1 June 1874. We show how simple trading posts at Surat, Madras, Bombay and Calcutta quietly became armed forts, how the Battle of Plassey on 23 June 1757 was effectively decided by a secret bargain before the fighting even began, and how the Treaty of Allahabad in 1765 handed a private firm the Diwani — the right to collect taxes across Bengal, Bihar and Orissa. We then follow the money: how Bengal's own tax revenue was used to buy Indian goods for export, how that system deepened the Bengal famine of 1770, how opium grown in Bengal was pushed into China to pay for tea, and how the Company's collapse in 1772 forced the British state to rescue it — setting off a chain of events that led directly to the Boston Tea Party in December 1773.
Key topics covered in this documentary:
• The 1600 royal charter and the first great joint-stock monopoly
• Plassey 1757: the battle that was won by betrayal, not by force
• The Diwani of 1765: a company wins the right to tax 20 million people
• A private army of 260,000 men — twice the size of Britain's own army
• The hidden tax loop that made conquest pay for itself
• The Bengal famine of 1770 and the opium-for-tea trade with China
• The crash of 1772, the state bailout, the Tea Act and the Boston Tea Party
• The rebellion of 1857, the Crown takeover of 1858, and the end in 1874
Why does a company from 400 years ago matter in London, New York or anywhere else today?
