🌙 The Half-Open Door and Nameless Dinner
On a rainy night 🌧️, five people walk into En Ji.
De says, “Come in. The soup is still warm 🥣.”
Zhixia draws an OH Card.
A half-open door 🚪.
Outside is rain; inside is light ✨.
She thinks of the man clutching a cloth bundle,
and the little girl tucking a steamed bun inside her coat.
It isn't greed. It is hunger worrying about tomorrow 🥺.
She writes 📝:
“They simply need a place where fear can rest.”
No one asks where they came from.
Only En keeps refilling bowls. “Have some more. There’s plenty left 🥣🥣”
Joey
Joey says quietly, “Today, I never once thought about stealing.”
De considers this for a moment. “Then this pot of soup has done its job 😌”
Joey
Joey lowers his head and takes another sip.
The soup is warm enough to make a person forget to stay guarded 🫂
The next morning, half a bun 🥟 and a note 📝 remain on the table:
“Thank you. Peace and joy!”
Zhixia tucks the note beside the OH Card.
The door remains half open 🚪.
That night, En makes another pot of soup. “Too salty?” De asks.
“It’s fine,” En replies. Then adds, “Let’s steam a few extra buns next time 🥟”
De smiles 😊. “How do you know there’ll be a next time?”
En places the lid on the pot. “It never hurts to be ready.”
Outside, the rain keeps falling 🌧️. Inside, the soup keeps steaming 🥣.
Looking at the card, Zhixia suddenly realizes—
Some doors stay open not because they are waiting for someone.
They stay open so that anyone passing by will know: someone is always here.
And the soup is still war
