Why do compliments make you over-explain?
Getting a compliment on what you know changes the direction of the conversation. Someone introduces you as the person who understands the subject, and you start adding details and examples nobody asked for. Behind it is the wish not to let down the person who saw you that way. Notice it the next time someone asks for your opinion. Giving sincere compliments to someone who knows the topic before the question also improves communication and leads to fuller answers.
