In his first week in Krakow, after two years with a thick grey grammar book, Ethan scored 98% on a placement test: fifty questions, forty-five minutes, forty-nine correct, and the number circled in red pen by his teacher. He kept the paper folded in his coat. Ten days later, at a neighborhood choir in a school gym, the conductor asked every new singer to stand up and say their name and their voice. Ethan stood up, checked three ways to say his name against every rule he knew, and went blank for nine seconds. The only word he managed was yes, twice, and a retired tram driver called him Mister Yes for a month. This episode is the story of how he got out: why a grammar test gives you time, paper, and the right answer on the page, while introducing yourself is a live performance where nobody is marking, and the four changes he made that winter. You will learn fifteen lines for saying who you are out loud: lines that open the door before your name, one small true thing to add after it, ways to let a mistake go without stopping, and questions that hand the conversation back.
THE 15 LINES IN THIS EPISODE
- "I don't think we've met."
- "I'm new here, by the way."
- "Sorry, I should have said hello."
- "I've seen you around, haven't I?"
- "I've only been here a month."
- ...and 10 more, all said out loud in the episode.
Every one is said slowly, repeated more than once, and then used in a real situation, so you can say it out loud with us instead of only recognizing it.
The Fluency Plateau is for people who already understand English but freeze when it is time to speak. Each episode takes one exact moment where you get stuck and hands you the lines that get you past it.
