Why does Allah test us with hardship, loss, uncertainty, and difficulty?
In this powerful talk, Shaykh Hamza Yusuf reflects on the Islamic understanding of trials and tribulations, explaining that hardship is not outside the purpose of this world—it is part of the test of life itself.
He explores the meanings of **sabr (patience), shukr (gratitude), tawakkul (trust in Allah), and sakinah (tranquility)**, and explains how both hardship and prosperity can become tests for the believer. True patience is not simply enduring pain, but remaining obedient to Allah, avoiding disobedience, and keeping the heart submitted to His decree.
The lecture also reminds us that the Prophets faced immense trials. Prophet Yusuf عليه السلام suffered through betrayal from his own brothers, while Prophet Muhammad ﷺ endured extraordinary loss and hardship yet continued to bring mercy, hope, and joy to those around him.
Shaykh Hamza Yusuf reminds us that the believer is tested not only through suffering, but also through blessings, wealth, privilege, and our responsibility toward others. The question is not simply, “Why is this happening?” but also: **How will we respond to what Allah has placed before us?**
May Allah grant us patience in hardship, gratitude in ease, tranquility of heart, and complete trust in Him.
