The narrative alternates between past events and the present day. It centers on Wei Wuxian (Xiao Zhan), a brilliant but unconventional cultivator who uses unorthodox demonic magic to save lives, eventually becoming feared and vilified by the major clans. After dying a tragic death, he is resurrected 16 years later via a self-sacrificing ritual. He reunites with his estranged soulmate, the righteous and stoic Lan Wangji (Wang Yibo), to uncover a massive, long-running conspiracy that caused the tragedy of their past.
