Maquia: When the Promised Flower Blooms (さよならの朝に約束の花をかざろう) is a 2018 Japanese fantasy drama film directed and written by Mari Okada and animated by P.A.WORKS. The story takes place in a world where the Iorph, a mysterious people known as the “Clan of Partings,” live for centuries while retaining the appearance of teenagers. They weave the events of their lives into a special fabric called Hibiol.
Maquia, an orphaned Iorph girl, has always felt somewhat alone despite living peacefully among her people. Her life changes when the Mezarte army invades the Iorph homeland, seeking the blood that gives the clan its extraordinary longevity. During the attack, Maquia loses her home and friends, while her friend Leilia is captured and the boy Krim disappears.
While wandering through a forest after escaping the destruction, Maquia discovers an abandoned baby who has just lost his parents. She names him Ariel and decides to raise him as her own. However, their relationship is shaped by a fundamental difference: Ariel grows older with each passing year, while Maquia remains physically young. As the seasons pass and the world around them changes, their bond evolves into a deeply emotional story about motherhood, family, separation, and the preciousness of time.
This release includes English (ENG), Brazilian Portuguese (PT-BR), Spanish (ESP), and additional subtitle options, allowing international viewers to experience Maquia and Ariel’s journey in multiple languages.
