Theirs Is the Glory (1946), also known as Men of Arnhem, is one of the most powerful and authentic British war films ever made. This remarkable film tells the true story of the British 1st Airborne Division during the Battle of Arnhem, part of Operation Market Garden in September 1944.
Unlike later films such as A Bridge Too Far, this was the first cinematic portrayal of Arnhem and focuses entirely on the British airborne troops who fought against overwhelming odds. Directed by World War I veteran Brian Desmond Hurst, the film was shot on location in Arnhem and Oosterbeek using real veterans of the battle, many of whom were re-enacting their own experiences.
Released in 1946, just months after the war ended, Theirs Is the Glory became the highest-grossing British war film for nearly a decade. Its realism, emotional weight, and historical accuracy make it an essential watch for anyone interested in WW2 history, British airborne forces, or classic war cinema.
This video explores the history, background, and significance of Theirs Is the Glory, examining why it remains one of the most important and truthful war films ever produced.
