For fourteen months Ethan listened to an Italian podcast for an hour every evening while he did the ironing, and by month nine he understood all of it at full speed, jokes included. He ironed shirts he never wears, he ironed bedding, and in the end he ironed tea towels, and he has kept one of them in a drawer ever since. Then a colleague asked him what the hosts had been arguing about the night before, and he stood there with a mug and could not answer, in Italian or in English. In fourteen months he had never once said anything back. The ironing gave him a receipt every single night and the Italian gave him nothing to hold, and a receipt feels exactly like progress because it has the same shape. This episode is about the hour you are quietly proud of: why the wrong practice is always the thing you are good at, why stopping it is harder than starting anything, and what changed when he cut the hour down to eleven minutes of talking to an empty room. Four families, fifteen short lines, all of them said out loud during the practice itself.
THE 15 LINES IN THIS EPISODE
- "I haven't said a word yet."
- "That was easy, so it was free."
- "Good score, no sentence."
- "Nothing came out of my mouth."
- "Now say it with the page shut."
- "One line out loud before I move on."
- ...and 9 more, all said out loud in the episode.
Every one is said slowly, repeated more than once, and then used in a real situation, so you can say it out loud with us instead of only recognizing it.
The Fluency Plateau is for people who already understand English but freeze when it is time to speak. Each episode takes one exact moment where you get stuck and hands you the lines that get you past it.
SPEAKING CHALLENGE
What's your tea towel, and what would you cut? Say your answer out loud before you write it.
