Your phone dies at 47 percent in cold weather for a reason that has nothing to do with running out of energy: the chip inside it is misreading its own voltage. A phone has no direct way to measure stored energy. Instead, a small fuel gauge chip reads voltage and compares it to a lab-built curve to guess the percentage shown on your screen.
