The Battle of Ostia is a Renaissance fresco designed by Raphael around 1514-1515. It depicts the legendary 849 naval victory at Ostia, where Pope Leo IV's forces defeated a Muslim fleet threatening Rome. The dramatic foreground shows captured enemies being brought before the pope, while ships and the chaotic battle unfold in the background.
But the painting carries a deeper political message: Raphael gave Pope Leo IV the features of Pope Leo X, connecting the ancient victory with Leo X's own ambitions to defend Christendom.
