From Camp Two, Araceli and her team began hearing troubling messages over the walkie-talkies. Climbers were in trouble. Some were unable to return to their tents. The conditions were becoming almost impossible to survive: extreme cold, violent winds and the deadly altitude of the world’s highest mountain.
What followed was a desperate rescue effort.
Araceli shares how their team opened their tents, food and oxygen to climbers who needed help. They used equipment originally prepared for their own expedition and eventually found themselves giving away everything they had to support the rescue.
Then came a moment that seemed impossible.
A helicopter rescue at such a dangerous altitude had been considered beyond reach. Yet one determined pilot chose to try. By reducing the helicopter’s weight and carrying only limited fuel, he attempted something few believed could be done.
His courage saved lives.
