Surah Al-Ikhlas is a profound declaration of pure monotheism. In only four verses, it describes Allah as One and Unique, perfectly self-sufficient, and completely unlike His creation. Key Word Meanings: Al-Ahad: The One and absolutely Unique. As-Samad: The One upon whom all creation depends, while He depends on no one. Begets: Allah has no child. Begotten: Allah was not born and has no parent. Kufuwan: An equal, equivalent, or counterpart. Brief Interpretation: “Say: He is Allah, One.” This establishes Allah’s absolute oneness. “Allah, the Eternal Refuge.” All creation turns to Him for its needs, while He needs no one. The surah then rejects the idea that Allah has a child or parent and concludes that nothing and no one is comparable to Him. Reflection: When your heart is overwhelmed by its many needs, remember As-Samad—the One whom everyone needs, while He needs no one.
