A dead star twisted empty space

NASA's IXPE observed a highly magnetized neutron star for more than 140 hours. The polarization pattern matches a 90-year-old prediction of quantum electrodynamics: in extreme magnetic fields, the vacuum can behave like a medium that changes light.
