In this video, we take a closer look at Fort Eben-Emael, one of Belgium's most formidable fortifications before the Second World War.
Built to help defend Belgium against invasion, Fort Eben-Emael was a massive concrete-and-earth fortress equipped with heavy artillery, machine guns, observation posts, underground tunnels, and heavily protected military installations.
So how did a fortress designed to stop an attacking army become vulnerable so quickly?
The answer came from an unexpected direction.
On May 10, 1940, German airborne assault troops arrived by DFS 230 gliders and landed directly on the roof of the fortress. Using surprise, specialized shaped charges, and a carefully prepared assault, they targeted the positions that made the fortress dangerous.
Within roughly twenty minutes, much of Eben-Emael's major offensive firepower had been neutralized.
But the fort did not simply surrender after twenty minutes. The Belgian garrison remained inside and continued fighting into the next day. The real story is more complicated — and more fascinating — than the famous twenty-minute claim suggests.
This analysis examines how the German assault exploited a weakness not in the fortress's concrete, but in the defensive concept behind it. By changing the direction of the attack, Germany avoided the kind of battle Eben-Emael had been designed to fight.
We also examine how the lessons of Eben-Emael connect to the wider problem of fixed fortifications in 1940, including the strategic thinking behind the famous Maginot Line.
