Every established route a Rocky Mountain goat
uses has a bottleneck — one point narrower and
more exposed than the rest of the path, where
a wider or clumsier animal simply could not
pass. This rock chimney is barely forty
centimeters across. To move through it, this
goat must turn her entire body sideways,
tucking her forelimbs tight against her ribs
to minimize her width, while her hindlimbs
provide the propulsion to push her through the
gap one careful phase at a time. Before
committing her weight to the internal ledge
inside the chimney, she tests it — a brief,
deliberate pause most viewers would miss if
they weren't looking for it. This kind of
narrow passage isn't an obstacle she stumbled
into. It's a chosen route, used repeatedly,
because what makes it difficult for her also
makes it completely impassable for any predator
large enough to be a threat. A mountain lion's
broader shoulders and less flexible spine
cannot replicate this sideways compression
through solid rock. The same narrowness that
demands her full concentration is the exact
reason this route keeps her safe. She clears
the gap, pauses once to reset her stance, and
continues on as if nothing remarkable happened
at all. For her, nothing did.
