For over 1,500 years, prehistoric Britain raised one of the most mysterious monuments ever built — without a king, an army, or even a written word. This documentary traces the full journey: from the wooden posts of hunter-gatherers in 7000 BC to the circular ditch, the Aubrey Holes filled with cremated ancestors, the blue stones hauled from West Wales, and the 30-ton sarsens dragged from the Marlborough Downs. At Durrington Walls, winter feasts fed the builders, with thousands of pigs slaughtered at the solstice.
But the newest interpretation, from 2025, goes further: Stonehenge may have been an act of unification — gathering stones, ancestors and labour from across the island to forge a British identity that did not yet exist.
