Breathing directly affects the amount of carbon dioxide (CO₂) in your blood, which helps regulate blood pH. Breathing faster or deeper than normal removes more CO₂, causing blood pH to rise slightly in a temporary state known as respiratory alkalosis. This can produce sensations such as tingling, light headedness, or dizziness before CO₂ gradually returns to normal during breath holding or regular breathing. A 2014 study from Radboud University found that volunteers trained in a specific breathing technique showed a reduced inflammatory response after receiving an experimental bacterial endotoxin compared with untrained participants. While these findings highlight how breathing can influence certain physiological processes under controlled conditions, they should not be interpreted as evidence that breathing exercises can treat infections or inflammatory diseases on their own.
