As a rookie you'll hook into Pacific Chub Mackerel. Just drop a sabiki rig with some shrimp down by the pilings—they're the easiest catch there.
For Mid-tier you're looking at Pacific Bonito. They hang out near the end of the pier, and early mornings are your prime time. To reel one in, you'll want a 7-foot medium-action casting rod, a 3000-size reel, 30 lb braid, and a 20 lb fluoro leader.
And for a real challenge, try for halibut. Hit the spots near underwater structures or pockets on the seabed around the pier as the water warms up—and August is prime time for them.
