Sacred hymn telling the extraordinary story of Saint Bernard of Clairvaux, the Cistercian abbot, preacher, mystic, reformer and Doctor of the Church, whose feast is celebrated on August 20.
Born into a noble family in Burgundy, Bernard could have chosen a life of wealth, education and worldly success. Instead, after seeking God's guidance in prayer, he chose the difficult Cistercian path and entered the monastery of Cîteaux.
His decision inspired an extraordinary response. Brothers, relatives and friends followed him into religious life, and Bernard eventually led a small band of monks into a poor and isolated valley. There they founded the monastery that became Clairvaux.
From this humble beginning came one of the most influential spiritual figures of the 12th century.
Bernard's eloquence drew people toward Christ. He founded monasteries, preached throughout Europe, advised popes and kings, defended Church unity, mediated disputes and called clergy and religious communities back to discipline and holiness.
Yet beneath his immense influence was a monk who longed for solitude and contemplation.
The hymn also reflects on Bernard's profound teaching about mercy and compassion—that we learn to recognize the suffering of others by confronting our own weakness, and that Christ draws near to humanity through His suffering and mercy.
The song incorporates imagery from Bernard's famous writings and his beloved hymn “Jesus, Thou Joy of Loving Hearts,” celebrating Christ as the Living Bread, the Fountain of Life and the ultimate desire of every human heart.
Saint Bernard was known as Doctor Mellifluus — the “Honey-Sweet Doctor” — because of the sweetness and eloquence of his preaching and writings.
