Open Letter: A Demand for Experimental Verification

This document, originally mimeographed and distributed in 1978, is a public appeal addressed to Italian and international health, political, and scientific institutions. Dr. Bernardoni denounces the systematic disregard of a social-based therapy for so-called “mental illness,” which she developed and tested over more than two decades.
The letter demands that the results of these long-standing studies—claimed to be effective and verifiable—be publicly subjected to rigorous scientific evaluation for the benefit of all.

«Antonietta Bernardoni (1919-2008), doctor, researcher and therapist from Modena, before graduating in Medicine and Surgery, had obtained a degree in Literature from the University of Florence. She is known, not only in Italy, for her radical criticism of psychiatry, psychoanalysis and psychology as inadequate tools for understanding the human personality. By valorising and placing at the center the healing processes of the so-called mentally ill, he proposed and applied an approach which, in the absence of lesions or dysfunctions of the Central Nervous System or other organic alterations, was based on concrete transformations of concrete situations capable of improving interpersonal relationships. Popular assemblies for the social management of mental health are also promoted, an organized solidarity activity of a free, continuous, concrete, collective, mutual nature, a form of ongoing education useful for the growth of the personality of the participants and the prevention of avoidable difficulties in interpersonal relationships..."
