This flight felt like a warm journey home. From the relaxing ambiance created by the white seats and pink mood lighting at boarding, to the top‑tier meals and wines at altitude, the crew’s genuine hospitality was present every step of the way. Despite some well‑known shortcomings in the seat hardware, the overall experience still left a lasting impression.
Flight Details
· Flight: Air New Zealand NZ81, Auckland (AKL) → Hong Kong (HKG)
· Aircraft: 8.6‑year‑old Boeing 787‑9 Dreamliner
· Duration / Distance: 10 hours 20 minutes, covering 9,170 km
Airport Expansion & Check‑in
Auckland Airport is undergoing its biggest‑ever expansion, which makes the departures hall a bit chaotic. However, Air New Zealand provides a dedicated Premium check‑in zone for business‑class passengers, where you can get everything done in one go, plus you get access to the Express Lane. Just a heads‑up: mornings are peak hours, so baggage screening can easily take 20 minutes or more.
Lounge Options at Auckland Airport
Business‑class passengers currently have two choices:
· The Lookout Lounge (temporary overflow) – a fully open‑plan space; although privacy is limited and it can be noisy, it’s less crowded and has plenty of seating. The food and drinks are the same as the main lounge.
· Air New Zealand Lounge (main) – better atmosphere, more facilities (including showers), but it gets extremely packed during peak times.
Recommendation: If you prefer fewer people and just want a light drink and a snack, The Lookout Lounge is the better choice. And we’re all looking forward to the opening of the brand‑new flagship Koru Premier Lounge!
Seat Experience (Business Premier – Old Cabin Layout)
On this flight we had the older cabin configuration. Here’s what stood out:
· Pros: The cabin feels relaxing and welcoming; the seat folds fully flat into a comfortable bed.
