Electric vehicle fires present unique challenges for firefighters due to lithium-ion battery thermal runaway, prolonged heat generation, and the risk of re-ignition. In this full-scale test in Seville, Spain, Fire Isolator demonstrates a complete EV fire suppression and containment approach using specialized firefighting equipment.
This live test took place in Seville, Spain, using a small electric vehicle, a Peugeot iOn. The vehicle was deliberately set on fire, including a battery thermal runaway scenario, to simulate a realistic electric vehicle fire incident.
Once the fire developed, the Fire Isolator EV Fire Blanket “Ultimate” was deployed. The blanket quickly brought the situation under control by isolating the fire, containing flames, heat radiation, and toxic smoke, and preventing fire spread to the surroundings.
Next, Fire Isolator potassium nitrate handheld aerosol units were deployed underneath the fire blanket. The aerosol cloud created beneath the blanket suppresses flames and neutralizes flammable gases and vapors, reducing the risk of deflagration and further escalation.
To support firefighter safety and temperature control, the Fire Isolator Watermist Applicator 138 was then deployed. The applicator was first positioned next to the vehicle to cool the surrounding area and the fire blanket, creating a safer working environment for first responders. A second water mist application was directed at the underbody of the vehicle to cool the battery area.
To stop the thermal runaway inside the battery pack and prevent re-ignition, the operation was completed using the Fire Isolator EV Fire Gun. By penetrating the battery through the vehicle’s floor pan, water could be delivered directly into the battery, flushing and cooling the cells internally.
