More than a century ago, my great-grandfather and his brother sailed from a small port town in southern China to seek a life in Malaya. Generations passed; the family scattered across Malaysia and Singapore — while one branch remained behind in the ancestral hometown, all but lost to us.
This short film follows our first journey back to that hometown — Hanjiang, in Shishi, Quanzhou — to find the eldest surviving relative of our great-grandfather's generation: a woman now in her nineties, the last living link to the family we were parted from.
How do you find your way home to a place you have never been?
