Cinema Novo ("New Cinema") was a radical film movement that emerged in Brazil in the late 1950s and 1960s, known for its blend of political critique, social realism, and artistic experimentation. It developed as a response to both Hollywood escapism and the Brazilian commercial film industry (known as chanchadas), aiming instead to represent the struggles of Brazil’s poor, oppressed, and marginalized populations.
