In the Mortal Kombat games, the Brotherhood of Shadow is Quan Chi's cult. The film tweaks this a bit, with Shinnok using the likes of Kia and Jataaka in a legion of blind followers. Thanks to Jennifer Grey (aka Sareena), the cult opens up a portal and brings, not just their god, but a ton of demons over to take Earthrealm.

Thankfully, while Johnny (voiced by Joel McHale) battles Shinnok, Ashrah is working to repel her kin from the Netherrealm. She wants to slay the demons and close the portal as part of her plan to purify her soul. Ashrah will lose her demonic edge and complete her redemption -- which is a win-win for the boss who sent her: Raiden. Ashrah does need help, however. Johnny's assistant, Chuck aids her, tossing Ashrah the Kriss (a mystical blade) to stab Sareena to death.
They operate in lockstep, killing or banishing the remaining demons back through the rift. As it seals, Chuck burns the scroll that opened the gateway. He doesn't care about anything other than ensuring no one comes through the portal again. It impresses Ashrah, who makes it clear to Chuck that he has heroic chops, too.
