A Heart as Wide as the Sky: Loving-Kindness and the Four Divine Abodes | Lesson 1
π Description:
A bird needs two wings to fly: wisdom and the heart. Wisdom without kindness can turn into a whip, and no one has ever been whipped into peace. In this lesson we explore the four divine abodes: loving-kindness, compassion, sympathetic joy, and equanimity. For each one we look at its 'near enemy,' the thing that looks like it but isn't: attachment, despair, envy, and cold indifference. We also see why a loving mind settles easily, how kindness softens the walls of the self, and why being gentle with yourself lets you keep practicing. Includes a full guided metta meditation, from yourself to a benefactor, a loved one, a neutral person, a difficult person, and finally all beings.
π‘ The idea to keep with you:
Wisdom shows that there's nothing to hold. Love makes the heart soft enough to actually let go.
β
Try this today:
Before getting out of bed, place your hand on your heart and say, 'May I be kind to myself today.' Whenever you pass a stranger, silently wish them, 'May you be happy.' When you hear someone's good news and something squeezes inside, don't blame yourself. Silently say, 'May your happiness last.'
