The idea for Blue Void came to
me one night while lying in bed
when, suddenly, like a fever
dream, I felt as though I were
falling. That sensation
transformed into the feeling of
swaying on the waves of an
ocean. I began imagining the
sound of the water, and I felt
myself becoming one with it.
This is the blue void – an
infinite ocean in a time before
existence. Though calm and
unthreatening, it is a completely
unstable environment: empty
and lonely. Yet somehow, within
it, life emerges.
Cells divide and form small
organisms that expand into the
emptiness. Soon they transform
into larger clusters and build
colonies. They are calm. But life
does not stop there. The
colonies evolve into more
complex shapes, almost beings.
What was once calm turns
hostile as clusters tear apart and
struggle to absorb one another.
Some expand, others die, until
eventually a vast network – like
neurons in a brain – is formed,
spreading across the blue void
like a blanket of webs and
clusters.
It is calm again.
Then, from below, a red glow
illuminates the ocean. It rises,
and a red orb slowly tears
through the clusters.
Ominously, it lingers above the
surface. Suddenly, it attacks, and,
like an infection, the red spreads
through the network. The
clusters fight back, yet they are
only fighting themselves as
more cells mutate and the
infection corrupts them from
within.
The network tries to move on
and exist despite the red
clinging to it, dragging half-severed
connections behind.
It attempts to remain calm and
deny its corruption, but soon
the mutilated clusters begin to
die and break apart. In one final
dramatic and painful struggle,
the clusters burst in sequence
until all the cells are broken
apart and sink back into the
blue void.
It is calm.
