The events of this story took place in Edo, now known as Tokyo, when a group of aliens known as the Amanto occupied the Earth at the end of the Edo era. The samurai tried to confront them, but they failed, so the Amanto issued a law prohibiting the samurai from carrying their swords in public places. The story focuses on a silver-haired samurai named Sakata Gintoki, his assistants Shinpachi, and the alien girl Kagura, who take up freelance work to earn money to pay their rent but always end up earning nothing.
