Six Inches, Two Feet, One Pass Left: Catching Film From Orbit

1 Lượt xem1 ngày trước

On 19 August 1960, a U.S. Air Force C-119 Flying Boxcar caught a capsule falling from orbit on its third pass. Inside was the first film ever returned from a CORONA spy satellite (Discoverer XIV). Before that day, the program had flown thirteen launches without bringing back a single usable frame. After the U-2 was shot down in May 1960, America could no longer fly over the Soviet Union. This is the story of the secret satellite disguised as the "Discoverer" science program, the capsule that came down near Spitsbergen, the radar plane that sent a crew the wrong way, and the ten men of "Pelican 9" who missed by six inches, then by two feet, and had sky for one more try. Told from declassified CIA and NRO histories and the recorded memories of the crew.
