Windows XP was a graphical operating system for personal computers, developed and sold by Microsoft. It managed the computer's hardware, memory, files, programs, users, networking, and interface.
Its name, XP, came from eXPerience.
Its central purpose was to bring together two previously separate directions in Windows:
Consumer Windows:
Windows 95, 98, and Me, familiar to home users but built on the older Windows 9x architecture.
Professional Windows:
Windows NT and Windows 2000, designed around a more robust architecture for business and enterprise use.
XP brought mainstream consumer Windows onto the NT foundation while retaining a relatively approachable desktop experience.
