Erased Forever or Never Gone: The Black Hole Bet

0 Lượt xem12 tiếng trước

In 1997 two physicists bet an encyclopedia on whether a black hole can erase information for good. One side conceded in 2004. The other still has not. In 1972 a Princeton graduate student named Jacob Bekenstein proposed that black holes carry hidden entropy, and in 1974 Stephen Hawking's own calculation showed they radiate that entropy away as pure, featureless heat, a discovery that seemed to mean information is truly destroyed. In 1997 Hawking and Kip Thorne bet John Preskill an encyclopedia that it was, and in 2004 Hawking conceded in Dublin, but Thorne never did. This is the story of the black hole information paradox, the 1993 Page curve that pinpointed exactly when the contradiction bites, the 2012 firewall argument that broke the leading patch, and the 2019 island calculation that, for the first time, made the numbers come out right, without settling the question for good.
