Noong 1601, nagpadala ang mga Kastila ng ekspedisyong militar sa hilagang Luzon upang mapasailalim sa kanilang kontrol at maipalaganap ang Kristiyanismo sa mga Igorot. Sa halip na mapasuko, sinalubong sila ng matinding paglaban. Humigit-kumulang 3,000 Igorot warriors ang nag-ambush sa ekspedisyong pinamunuan ni Lt. Mateo de Aranda. Nalipol o natalo nang malubha ang puwersang Kastila at napilitang umatras ang mga nakaligtas. Mahalagang paglilinaw: Ang “3,000” ay tumutukoy sa tinatayang bilang ng Igorot warriors, hindi sa 3,000 Igorot na napatay.
