Bara Katra in Old Dhaka Was Already Over 200 Years Old in 1875

1 Lượt xem01/09/2026

This 1875 photograph of Bara Katra in Old Dhaka captures more than a historic landmark — it preserves two different periods of Dhaka history in a single image. Bara Katra was built in 1643–44 during the Mughal period. By the time this photograph was taken in 1875, the building was already more than 200 years old. Standing near the Buriganga River, Bara Katra was associated with visiting merchants and represents an important surviving layer of Mughal Dhaka. The camera captured nineteenth-century Old Dhaka, but within the photograph stood a landmark carrying the history of the seventeenth century.
