On August 2, 2025, experienced pilot Gregory Vaughan, 72, his partner Kim Worner, 66, and their dog Molly took off from George Town Airport in northern Tasmania aboard a distinctive bright-green, two-seat Bristell S-LSA.
Their destination was Hillston in New South Wales, with a planned fuel stop in regional Victoria.
They never arrived.
What followed was an extensive search across northern Tasmania, Bass Strait and surrounding islands. Aircraft, helicopters, police vessels and search teams were deployed in an effort to locate Gregory, Kim, Molly or any trace of their unmistakable green aircraft.
But nothing was found.
No confirmed wreckage.
No debris that revealed where the aircraft went.
And no distress call after departure.
Adding to the mystery, friends became concerned when Gregory's expected radio call after take-off was not heard, and subsequent reporting revealed that the aircraft's transponder had not been tracked during the flight.
In this episode of Evidence Bag Stories, we reconstruct the known timeline of the flight, the enormous search operation, the missing radio contact and tracking information, and the unanswered question at the centre of the case:
How can a bright-green aircraft carrying two people and their dog simply disappear?
More than a year later, Gregory Vaughan, Kim Worner and Molly remain missing, and despite extensive searching, no trace of their aircraft has been found. Police have said there is no evidence suggesting suspicious circumstances, but exactly what happened after they left George Town Airport remains unknown.
