The Story of Saint John Eudes | Catholic Hymn
“Hearts of Fire” is a devotional hymn telling the remarkable story of Saint John Eudes (1601–1680), a French priest, missionary, founder and great apostle of the Sacred Heart of Jesus and the Immaculate Heart of Mary.
Born on a farm in northern France, John Eudes followed a path that led him from the Oratorians to parish missions, plague ministry, seminaries, and the founding of new religious communities.
During the terrible plagues of 1627 and 1631, John volunteered to care for the sick and even lived in a large cask in a field so that he would not endanger his fellow religious. Later, his powerful preaching and ministry of reconciliation saw him conduct more than a hundred parish missions, bringing countless people back to Christ.
John was deeply concerned about the formation of priests and founded the Congregation of Jesus and Mary (Eudists) to help educate and form the clergy. His compassion also led him to establish a refuge for women seeking to escape prostitution and hardship.
Yet Saint John Eudes is especially remembered for his profound devotion to the Sacred Heart of Jesus and the Immaculate Heart of Mary. He taught that Jesus is the source of holiness and that Mary is a model of the Christian life. His work helped prepare the way for the wider liturgical devotion to the Hearts of Jesus and Mary.
This song celebrates his message of mercy, priestly holiness, compassion for the suffering, and total devotion to Christ through Mary.
