Dead of Night is one of those movies that really started the genre. Many of her short stories could be tamed by today's standards into today's horror plots. Most notably, the ventriloquist's dummy comes to life (Michael Redgrave sequence). This film takes horror where it should stay...thriller. We can see all the blood and gore today, but why are films like The Six Sense (1999) or What Lies Undereath (2000) still successful? Everyone has their own fears and terrifying thoughts; The idea of fear and terror adds to the suspense film in all respects more than slasher horror films... Perhaps the best depicted are Psycho, Halloween and Scream Films. Dead of Night is not a Hitchcock film, but it uses the same actors from his days in England and uses the same suspense techniques that he saw in his television series. Watch this movie and see it from the point of view of 1940s viewers and learn why it was so popular.
