Welcome to one of the most intense and nerve-wracking outdoor fishing adventures you will ever watch! In this episode, we venture deep into the untamed and wild forests of Sofia, Bulgaria, with a single goal: trout fishing. However, this is no ordinary relaxing day by the water. Just last May, this very forest was the site of a tragic and fatal bear attack. Knowing that we are walking through the exact same territory where aggressive brown bears roam makes every step feel like a dangerous survival mission.
From the moment we step foot into the dense woods early in the morning, the tension is incredibly high. I can honestly say I have never been more nervous or scared during a fishing trip. We barely slept the night before just thinking about what might be lurking in the trees. The terrain itself is completely unforgiving. We are surrounded by thick vegetation, slippery rocks, and treacherous hidden paths that make it feel like a scene straight out of an action or survival movie.
As we navigate the tricky riverbanks and steep slopes, we stumble upon some truly chilling discoveries. We find fresh animal tracks that clearly show heavy wildlife activity, likely wild boars or bears sliding down the muddy banks to drink from the stream. The deeper we go, the stranger the atmosphere becomes. At one point, we notice a very heavy, pungent wild animal odor in the air and discover fresh scat right on our walking path. Was it a bear? We can only guess, but the warning signs are everywhere. To keep ourselves safe, we rely on a loud 'bear bell' app playing from our phones to make noise and warn any hidden predators to stay away from us.
Despite the fear, the adrenaline, and the grueling physical effort of hiking for hours through paths that aren't even meant for humans, we push forward to find the perfect river spots. The trout in these waters are incredibly stealthy, hiding under rocks in shallow waters, making the actual fishing just as challenging as the exhausting hike.
