Timur (2025) is an Indonesian action film directed by and starring Iko Uwais, is inspired by a real historical event, but it is not a completely true story.
The real event was the 1996 Mapenduma hostage crisis in Papua, when foreign researchers were taken hostage by an armed group. Indonesian special forces subsequently carried out a rescue operation.
However, the movie's characters—particularly Timur, Sila/Apolo and their personal relationships—are fictionalized. Iko Uwais has explained that the film's story itself is not a direct retelling, but draws inspiration from the real events and combines elements from several military operations.
