The Impossible Siege of Tyre: How Alexander the Great Built a Road Across the Sea

Alexander the Great faced an almost impossible task at the Siege of Tyre in 332 BC: conquer a city that the sea seemed to make unreachable. History is full of stories about wars, powerful commanders, and the decisions that changed the course of nations. From forgotten battles and ancient empires to the military forces that shaped the modern world, Zone of History explores the past through storytelling. In this video, we travel back to one of the most extraordinary sieges of the ancient world. The Phoenician city of Tyre stood on an island, protected by deep waters, powerful fortifications, and defenders who believed their position gave them a decisive advantage. Alexander could not simply march his army to the city walls. Instead, he ordered the construction of a massive causeway across the sea, connecting the mainland to the island. What began as an engineering project became a dangerous battlefield, exposing his men to attacks from Tyrian defenders and the challenges of building under enemy fire. But the causeway was only the beginning. Alexander's forces employed siege engines, naval support, and relentless engineering to overcome the city's defenses. After months of resistance, Tyre finally fell—and the landscape itself was permanently changed. How did Alexander turn an island fortress into a reachable target? Why did his army spend months attempting what seemed impossible? And how did a road built across the sea help change the outcome of one of antiquity's most famous sieges? The answers reveal a story of military strategy, engineering, determination, and the brutal realities of ancient warfare. If you enjoy ancient history, military strategy, legendary commanders, ancient civilizations, epic battles, historical mysteries, and fascinating moments from the past, you're in the right place.
