Ratatouille Is the Best Pixar Film, and Anton Ego Is the Proof

5 ViewsOct 9, 2026

Ratatouille is the best film Pixar has made, and the proof is the critic. It ends by putting Anton Ego on the page to tell you what it was about, makes him right, and then makes him pay for it. A held take on Ratatouille (2007, written and directed by Brad Bird), argued on three grounds after the two best cases against it are built at full strength: WALL-E as the braver film (no human voice until an advert at 5:01, no conversation until 39:31, the Los Angeles critics' Best Film over The Dark Knight) and Toy Story 3 or Inside Out as the more complete one (the incinerator's 82 silent seconds, Turan and Debruge calling Inside Out Pixar's best). Ground one, the ending is a confession written by the critic and it is the film's thesis, set up by four readings of Anyone Can Cook and corrected once. Ground two, the food is the only Pixar subject that is not a metaphor: Thomas Keller's confit byaldi. Ground three, the third act is a heist that pays every setup, including a critic who told you in advance what happens if the dish fails. The bite is measured on the disc: 54 seconds without dialogue, two shots of flashback, the pen at 1:36:52. Then the price: Ego loses his job, Gusteau's closes, and the critic is a regular at a small room with a rat on the sign. Every quoted line is from the disc; the numbers carry fetch dates.
