The Lion King Still Hits 32 Years On, and It Is Not the Songs

5 ViewsOct 7, 2026

The Lion King still hits, harder than almost anything Disney has made since, and the songs are not why. The songs are what everybody remembers. They are not the thing that hurts. A video essay on The Lion King (1994, dirs. Roger Allers and Rob Minkoff) and why it still makes a room go quiet 32 years on. Five lines of evidence: Hans Zimmer's score, written as a requiem for his own father and not released in full until 2014; the silence, measured on the disc's English track, where the minute after the stampede sits 13 decibels under the loudest stretch; the stampede itself, five animators and technicians and two years for two and a half minutes with no song in it; Jeremy Irons' spoken lie in the gorge; and a climax that is a confession extracted twice. Then the best case against, at full strength: the diamond soundtrack, Broadway's highest grossing production, Frozen's Let It Go, and a 2019 remake that kept every song and lost the feeling. Moana, Frozen 2 and Beauty and the Beast for comparison. Every quoted line is from the discs or the published record.
