The Prey Lions Fear Most | Africa's Big Five | FULL EPISODE | Wildlife Documentary opens where every lion pride learns respect: in front of the Cape buffalo, the member of Africas Big Five that kills more lions than any other prey on the continent. Then the film asks a larger question, why the greatest empire any land predator ever built stops exactly where the grass ends. This is the story of the lion empire and the border it could never cross. Lions once ruled three continents, from Greece across Persia to India, and their Ice Age sister lineage ran from Britain to Alaska. Today they hold seven percent of that map. Through cinematic footage and educational storytelling, this documentary follows the machine that carried the empire so far and the terrain that finally switched it off. The machine runs on three things, and the Serengeti shows each one. Formation: at Etosha in Namibia, four hundred eighty six group hunts by individually known lionesses revealed that every female keeps her own position, and hunts succeed when most stand in the right place. Numbers: at Savuti, prides without males lose nearly a fifth of their food to hyenas, and lionesses count strange roars before deciding to attack. Land: thirty eight years across forty six Serengeti prides prove the pride is first of all a technology for holding ground. And a fourth pillar no law records knowledge shown by two orphan sisters on the dry Hoanib riverbed who bring down a giraffe by luck, then fourteen days later bring down an adult by craft. The first time was luck. The second was a trade.
