His defense attorney, who witnessed the execution, reported that Ritchie lifted violently from the gurney shortly after the process began. Ritchie had been on death row since his conviction in 2002. Hours later in Texas, Matthew Lee Johnson, 50, was executed for the 2012 murder of Nancy Judith Harris, a 76-year-old convenience store employee in Garland, Texas — he doused her with lighter fluid and set her on fire during a robbery.
