Why did the United States deploy PGM-19 Jupiter IRBM to Italy and Turkey?

After the Soviet Union launched Sputnik, the United States deployed PGM-19 Jupiter nuclear missiles in Italy and Turkey to strengthen NATO’s defenses and deter Moscow. However, the deployment had an unexpected consequence. In 1962, the Jupiter IRBMs became a key bargaining point during the Cuban Missile Crisis between Washington and Moscow.
