More than 1,500 men gathered in the early hours of Saturday, August 22, for the Camino of St Joseph in Sydney, Australia—a night pilgrimage of prayer, sacrifice, brotherhood and devotion to Saint Joseph. While Sydney's Friday-night streets were filled with neon, nightlife and noise, another sound filled the darkness: the steady rhythm of the Rosary and the footsteps of men walking behind the statue of Saint Joseph. The pilgrimage began at St Patrick's Church Hill, one of Sydney's oldest Catholic sites, and travelled more than 20 kilometres through the inner city and suburbs before reaching St Mary's Cathedral at sunrise. Along the way, pilgrims stopped at seven churches: ⛪ St Patrick's, Church Hill ⛪ St Brendan's, Annandale ⛪ St Joseph's, Camperdown ⛪ St Benedict's, Broadway ⛪ St Peter's, Surry Hills ⛪ St Canice's, Elizabeth Bay ⛪ St Mary's Cathedral, Sydney But this was more than a walk. Men came carrying intentions for their families, for the sick, for their marriages, for their children and for their own conversion. Before the pilgrimage even began, long lines formed for Confession, with priests hearing sins and offering the mercy of Christ. One pilgrim summed up the purpose simply: “I'm walking for my family… to show them who a real man is.” Saint Joseph stands as a powerful model of fatherhood, sacrifice, protection, courage, humility and faithfulness. The Camino reminds us that many men today are searching for brotherhood, purpose and a deeper understanding of what it means to be a husband, father and Christian man. As the sun rose over Sydney and the towers of St Mary's Cathedral appeared, tired feet gave way to renewed hearts. Walk on, Saint Joseph. Lead us to Jesus. Teach us to serve our families. Make us better fathers, better husbands, better men.
