Saint Jane Frances de Chantal - Feast Day

St. Jane Frances de Chantal (1572–1641) lived an extraordinary life of courage, love, suffering, and unwavering trust in God. She was a devoted wife and mother, a widow and single parent, a capable manager of a large estate, a spiritual adviser to thousands of women, and the founder of the **Order of the Visitation of Holy Mary**. Yet behind her remarkable accomplishments was a hidden struggle that lasted for decades. After the tragic death of her beloved husband, Christophe, Jane endured deep sorrow, anxiety, doubt, fear, and what appears to have been a long period of depressive suffering. For more than forty years, she battled disturbing thoughts and spiritual darkness. And still, she refused to give up. Her answer was not despair, but **trust in God**. Jane prayed for the grace to surrender her will completely to the Lord, asking to become an instrument in His hands. Even when the darkness returned, she continued to hope. Near the end of her life, after 41 years of these trials, she declared that she would never stop trusting in God. A turning point came when she met **St. Francis de Sales**, who became her spiritual director and closest friend. His gentle wisdom helped Jane face her troubling thoughts without allowing them to control her. His famous image of the bees reminded her not to fear every disturbing thought or give it power by continually dwelling upon it. After her husband's death, she devoted herself to her children and endured years caring for a difficult father-in-law. Then, in 1610, she worked with St. Francis de Sales to establish the first Visitation community in Annecy. Despite poverty, sickness, opposition, slander, and countless difficulties, the order spread throughout France.
